REMEMBER
  • Causes of vomiting vary with age and with severity.
  • Occasional vomiting (non-forceful /no blood /no green/ otherwise well child) is generally non-pathological.
  • The most common cause is gastroenteritis. Usually caused by a virus or bacteria.
  • The child usually gets better after a few days.

HOME MANAGEMENT

  • Keep a close eye on the child.
  • If the cause is a tummy bug, your child should still be feeding well, playful and be their usual self once the temperature is controlled.
  • Give plenty of fluids to drink- Sips of water/ Oral Rehydration Solution more frequently.
  • In babies -carry on breastfeeding or giving them milk feeds.
  • Fruit juice and fizzy drinks should be avoided until they’re feeling better.

CONTACT DOCTOR IN

  • Repeated vomiting( especially in babies < 1 year)
  • Dehydration-
    (dry mouth /no tears /not passed urine( generally >8 hours)/ drowsiness/ excess sleepiness)
  • Blood in vomit or green vomit
  • Vomiting > 2 days
  • Rash over body
  • Abnormal behaviour/ movements/ fits/ stiff neck
  • Tummy distention / severe pain

CAUSES OF REPEATED VOMITING

In babies- ( seek attention if change in colour/ increased crying/ lethargy/ risk for infection in pregnancy)

  • Reflux
  • Cows milk allergy
  • Infection
  • Surgical causes

In older children

  • Ear infection
  • Tummy infection( Gastritis/ Gastroenteritis)
  • Urine infection( common in girls)
  • Surgical causes( Severe pain/ Tummy distention/ not passing stool/ blood in stool)
  • Brain infections/ Brain Tumours ( severe vomiting/ repeated/ abnormal behaviour)
