Eye irrigation- procedure
Eye irritation is necessary to clear foreign body from the eye or give a good cleaning of the eye.
Equipment required

Sterile dressing pack
-
Sterile normal saline or sterile water for irrigation

Towel
-
Plastic cape
-
Irrigating flask
-
Warm water to warm the irrigating fluid before installation

Anaesthetic drops
-
Receiver bowl
Procedure

Explain the procedure to the parent and the child
-
Calm the child. Make sure you have good light in the room
-
Prepare the irrigation fluid to appropriate temperature by placing it in the warm water bowl

Wash your hands with soap and water and dry your hands

Apply the anaesthetic drops to the eye

If possible remove the eye lens if any before the procedure

Get the child to wear the plastic cape and Place the towel on a table.
Get the child in right posture-

Support the head by keeping the chin horizontal. You can do this by placing the chin of the child on the towel on the table

Now incline the head to a side so the affected eye is downwards. And hold the patient’s eyelids apart sing your index and thumb fingers. Make sure not to press the yes during this.

Ask the child to hold the receiver bowl against the cheek below the eye being irrigated

Now gently flow the water through the irrigation bowl from the nasal side outwards.

Ask the patient to move their eyes during the procedure. Also, try to evert the upper and lower eyelids to make sure you have irrigated the corners.

Keep on irrigating for a few minutes until you confident you have covered all sections of the eye

Take the receiver and dry the cheek of the patient with a towel

Once the procedure is done, dispose the equipment correctly and record the procedure in the documents

Wash your hands with soap and water
