Diphtheria- What is that?
DIPHTHERIA
- This is another bacteria infection which is potentially dangerous that is caused by the same species of bacteria as tetanus.
THE BACTERIA
- The bacteria is called Corynebacterium Diphtheriae
- This bacteria spreads easily from person to person either by coughing, sneezing, utensils
SYMPTOMS
- This bacteria affects the throat and windpipe generically
- Features of infections like high fever and lethargy
- It causes a thick white patch on the back of the tongue- the doctor generally looks for this
- This patch can cause difficulty in breathing
- Fast heart rate- The toxin affects the heart at later stage with severe consequence
DIAGNOSIS
- This patch is sampled and tested for the bacteria
PREVENTION
- Vaccination prevents this disease.
- This vaccination is done at birth with multiple doses at regular intervals (DPT, DT- where D stands for Diphtheria)

TREATMENT
- If Diphtheria is suspected, the child will be admitted with supportive care
- Breathing assistance if needed
- Antibiotics through the vein
- In severe cases, a ready-made antibody is given( Antitoxin). This is done especially if the heart is affected
