POINTS TO REMEMBER
  • Most cases are due to Virus.
  • Diarrhoea usually clears up with supportive treatment in a few days.
  • Aim to get over Dehydration ( Dry Eyes/ Dry mouth/ Dry Nappies/ No urine) with early introduction of fluids.

SUPPORTIVE TREATMENT

  • Give small, frequent sips of Oral Rehydration Solution irrespective of Diarrhoea/ Vomiting.
  • In babies- continue Breastfeeding.
  •  Avoid Fresh Fruit juice/ fizzy drinks instead try- Coconut water/ Buttermilk/ Curds/ Lime Juice ( add pinch of table salt)

FEEDS

  • Give children solid food as soon as they feel like eating.
  • Get over the dehydration before reinforcing solids.
  • Give small, light meals sprinkled with Table salt (potatoes, rice, bananas, soup, and boiled vegetables).

MEDICATION

  • If Fever- -consider Paracetamol
  • Most Episodes DO NOT need Antibiotics. Antibiotics can occasionally cause more harm.
  • Antibiotics recommended only if
    • Specific type of bacteria has been identified as the cause
    • Blood in stool.
    • Cholera

SEE DOCTOR IN

  • Severe dehydration
  • No improvement in 2 days
  • Blood in stool
  • Severe lethargy/ Unable to feed
  • Long lasting diarrhoea with weight loss.
  • Tummy bloating
 PROPHYLAXIS
  • ROTA virus immunisation in first 8 weeks of life
  • Wash hands before feed
