COLIC PAIN IN BABIES
Colic pain typically occurs 2 months onwards
It is a constant cry due to dull aching tummy pain due to gaseous distention.
It is diagnosed after excluding other serious causes of pain.
This is a dull boring pain occurring generally during evenings.
The aim of the methods below is to distract the baby from this pain.
TIPS FOR COLIC PAIN MANAGEMENT
- Carrying your baby during a crying episode
- Playing some soothing music in the background and gentle rocking of the baby.
- Avoid excess crying in baby by timely feeding.
- Burping the baby following feeds by patting the shoulder gently( at least 15 post feed)
- Give your baby a massage ( oil if not allergic) preferable in the evening with a bath( keep baby warm all through)
- Consider Simethicone drops( Colic drops) -they help reduce gas production
- Occasionally avoidance of dairy products/ caffeine in mothers diet can be considered.
GET MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY IF BABY-
- Has a high pitch cry not responding to carrying the baby and calming.
- Child becomes floppy/ fits/ change in colour.
- Increased breathing effort/ distress/ abnormal sounds.
- Vomiting/ blood in the stool.
- Any localised swelling/ change in colour.
- Has a fever of 38C or above.
