The vaginal swab is done to look for bacterial infections and discharge.

Always remember to rule out abuse if the vaginal discharge is suspicious

  • Explain the procedure to the patient and the attendees
  • Wash hands with antibacterial soap and water or use the bactericidal hand solution
  • It can be done with the child lying supine on the bed. And parents comforting her beside
  • Get the child to open her legs wide.
  • Introduce the speculum until the vagina to separate the walls
  • Rotate and swab the area in the vaginal vault
  • Place the specimens in an appropriate container with the details of the patients and the type of specimen and send it to the lab
  • Make sure you document it
