Urinary catheterisation in ‘Male’
Equipment
Sterile catheter pack with following-
-
Gallipot/ receiver.
-
Swabs and Disposable towels
-
Disposable pad
-
Sterile gloves
-
Appropriate catheter
-
Sterile aesthetic lubrication jelly
-
Specimen container
-
0.9% sodium chloride solution
-
Alcohol rub
-
Hypoallergenic tape
-
Sterile water
-
Syringe
-
Plastic apron
-
Drainage bag
PROCEDURE
-
Explain the procedure to the patient and the parents
-
Get the child in supine position with legs extended
-
Wash hands with bactericidal soap and water
-
Put on the disposable apron
-
Prepare the trolley to patients bedside
-
Open the outer cover of catheterisation pack
-
Using aseptic technique, open the supplementary pack
-
Place disposable pad under patients buttocks
-
Clean hands again with bactericidal hand rub
-
Put on sterile gloves
-
Place sterile towels across patients thighs.
-
Wrap sterile topical swab around the penis. Retract the foreskin and clean glans penis with 0.9% sodium chloride
-
Apply the lubricating gel onto your glove on the dorsal aspect. You can also apply the gel directly on the glans penis if child older
-
Grasp the penis firmly at the glans raising it until it’s almost extended .

Place receiver containing the catheter between the patients legs.

Insert the catheter for few centimeter until urine begins to flow
-
If resistance is felt at the external sphincter, increase the traction on the penis slightly and apply steady pressure on the catheter.

Once you get the flow, insert the catheter for a few more centimeters until the end of catheter to make sure it’s in the bladder .

Gently inflate the balloon according to the recommendations
-
Now withdraw the catheter slightly and attach it to the drainage system
-
Support the catheter by attaching it to the thigh with tape.
