Penile swabs may be needed in cases of discharge suggesting an infection.

Follow the procedure as below

• Explain the procedure to the patient and the attendees
• Wash hands with antibacterial soap and water or use the bactericidal hand solution. Wear gloves.
• It can be done with the child lying supine on the bed. The parents can comfort him by sitting beside him. In older children, they can stand when you do it.
• Retract the prepuce of the penis gently.
• Rotate and swab the area in urethral meatus
• Place the specimens in an appropriate container with the details of the patients and the type of specimen and send it to the lab
• Make sure you document it
