  • You must have always wondered as to how and when does your child’s language develop.

  • Most of the language development occurs between the years of 2 to 5 years.

  • These are the years when you notice your child being more involved and trying hard to engage in vocalising.

  • Children begin by speaking as words in late first 2 years, like mum or milk.

  • Slowly they begin joining sentences. Like Mum come or give milk.

  • As the child grows, the number of words in sentences increases.

  • It is believed that the number of words in a sentence roughly equals the age of the child in children less than 5 years. For example- a 2-year-old would use 2-word sentences like ‘ Mum milk’ and 3-year-olds would use Mom give milk’.

  • The language development depends largely on the environment around them. When adults try to interact more with children and encourage them to vocalise, the better the development.

Do children exposed to 2 languages find it difficult?

  • Many of our children may be exposed to 2 languages.

  • Though initially they may lag behind in language acquisition, but catch up soon once they understand the principles of the language.

  • Children exposed to more than 1 language have a better process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought.

How can I help my child’s language development?

  • In the first year of life, engage the babies by talking to them. Making funny faces and engaging in laughter, can interest them.

  • Over 1 year, engage them by showing picture books.

  • It is known to improve a child’s vocabulary when a parent constantly reads stories to them. like bedtime stories

  • You can begin by reading the stories aloud so to gain their attention and ask them simple questions.
