BURNS- First Aid
BURNS AND SCALDS (LIQUID INDUCED BURNS)
START FIRST AID IMMEDIATELY
First aid –
First aid –
- Move the child from the location of the incident- douse the flames with water/ extinguisher.
- Remove all clothing and jewellery.
- Run cool water( not cold/ no ice) on affected area for at least 20 minutes
- Keep unaffected part of body warm( cover with blankets)
- Lightly Cover the burn with cling film( don’t wrap it tightly).
- Give Paracetamol/ Ibuprofen for pain
PREVENTION
- Install smoke detectors at home
- Keep flammables away from reach of children
- Keep Fire extinguishers handy
ELECTRICAL BURNS
SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY
- Safely switch off the power supply
- Remove the person from the electrical source using a wooden stick or wooden chair.
- Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation –
- Babies< 1 year – First give 5 mouth to mouth breaths
Then 3 (chest compression) : 1 (breath)- continue till medical help arrives
- Children>1 year- First, give 5 mouth to mouth breaths
Then 15 (chest compressions): 2 (Breath)-continue till medical help arrives
- Babies< 1 year – First give 5 mouth to mouth breaths
CHEMICAL BURNS
- Wear protective gloves before helping patient
- Remove any contaminated clothing from the children
- If the chemical is dry, brush it off their skin
- Use Cool running water on burn surface
MEET YOUR DOCTOR IF
- Large or deep burns – bigger than the affected person’s hand.
- Burns that cause charred skin.
- Burns on the face, hands, arms, feet, legs or genitals.
- Chemical/ electrical burns.
- Underlying medical conditions.
- Cold, skin, sweating, rapid, breathing, and weakness.
- Child under 5 years
- If suspicion of Inhaled smoke.
DANGER SIGNS
- Severe burns
- Painless Burns
- Sleepiness/ Unconsciousness
- Body Colour Change
