DENTAL CARIES

Is the infection of the tooth.

  • This depends on the sugar load in the food of child and the number of bacteria lodged between teeth.
  • This bacteria is known to produce acid that helps bacteria multiply and dissolve the teeth.
  • Hence regular teeth brushing helps maintain hygiene
  • Primary teeth caries can affect Permanent teeth development

 

SYMPTOMS

  • Darkening of teeth
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet
  • Foul taste or sensation

 

COMPLICATIONS

  • If the infection spreads from surface of teeth to centre, it can cause severe pain. The infection can spread deeper to the bone to form pus

 

TREATMENT

  • Oral antibiotics( Penicillin group) are used to treat infections- Talk to your doctor
  • Regular painkillers are given
  • A dentist / Surgeon would attempt to completely remove the infected part and repair by firmly fixing a crown.

 

PRECAUTIONS

  • Oral hygiene- regular brushing helps. Younger children may need assistance with brushing.
  • Sugar and sweetened beverages need to be limited to lunch timings( where applicable) followed by rinsing the mouth
